Mica Iron Oxide Pigment

1. Characteristics

It has a fish-scale-like hexagonal crystal structure and excellent chemical inertness. It forms flat, stacked layers in the paint film, arranged in a directional pattern to create a barrier layer that effectively blocks the penetration of moisture and corrosive substances, mitigating the effects of the atmosphere on the paint film. It reflects external light while absorbing UV rays below 550nm (nanometers) that damage the paint film. It creates a concave and convex surface in the paint film, enhancing the adhesion of the secondary coating and preventing solvents from affecting the paint film, which can cause defects such as adhesion loss, blistering, and shrinkage. This maintains the integrity of the paint film. The non-toxic synthetic content can be controlled to no less than 85%, with a low soluble content and uniform particle size.

2. Applications

It is used as a topcoat and primer on steel structures such as railway bridges, cable-stayed bridges, transmission towers, and lighting towers. It is particularly suitable for large structures with long painting periods.

The anti-corrosion effect on steel structures has long been recognized, including the maintenance effects of the Eiffel Tower in France. China began trial production of micaceous iron anti-corrosion paint as early as the 1970s, primarily using natural micaceous iron oxide. Overseas, both synthetic and natural micaceous iron oxide have achieved industrial production. The UK and Japan primarily produce synthetic products, while Austria utilizes abundant mineral deposits to produce natural products. Natural products are produced in China in places like Anhui, while micaceous iron anti-corrosion paint products are also produced in Tianjin and Shanghai.
